Exhibited concurrently with the Rembrandt in America exhibition October 30, 2011 through January 22, 2012. Self, Observed reexamines the function of portraiture and highlights the enduring influence of Rembrandt.
College students from across the country were invited to submit original self-portraits through this blog. A group of eight students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill curated Self, Observed in collaboration with the NCMA Education Department. The group selected 41 works from over 160 submissions.
While the deadline has passed to submit both 2-d works and videos, you can continue to follow this blog to see images from the exhibition. You can also ask questions about the exhibition or visit the archive to see past blog posts.

Self, Observed

Flora , c. 1654.
Self, Observed, inspired by the theme of self-portraiture which consumed Rembrandt for much of his life, will coincide with the upcoming exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art. While Rembrandt in America will not officially open until October 30, 2011, I recently accompanied our docents as part of their training to see the exhibition in person. Though I had studied these images in books and online for months, seeing the works in person was quite amazing. I particularly enjoyed this small painting, The Operation (Touch), because the color palette is so much brighter than many of Rembrandt’s more mature works. As part of a series of the five senses, Rembrandt depicted the sense of touch in this painting and the sense of hearing in an adjacent painting in the gallery. Come see the works next weekend when the exhibition opens because it is an entirely different experience than seeing it online.

Artist Statement

When I feel upset about something, I often write and replay movie scenes about it in my head. I was trying to come up with ideas for an important screenplay for a short film I am supposed to make and could come up with nothing, felt like nothing, and had no idea why I deserved the chance to say anything with a video to anybody. That’s usually how I feel before I start a project. So I started writing down all the ways life was actually working around me, and then I started to exaggerate. The final list of “scenes” in Movielife is a list that expresses my faults and life as they are and as I wish they could be. A lot of things that actually could, did, and will not happen to me are expressed in the text of Movielife, in confusing and muddled orders. The frustration and idealism that are expressed side by side in this piece are often represented the same way in my consciousness. My compulsion to make art or videos is usually driven by the urge to put something better, more earnest, more special into the world, yet by the same coin, the idea of a “better” circumstance or self or product makes me self-defeating, impractical, detached from the means to become “better”. So, making this video is, in a sense, a confession of my insecurities, and a time to be vulnerable in front of others; and hopefully, someone who might see it will sympathize, and blame themselves ever-so-slightly less for whatever “flaw” they can’t seem to tame or conquer.

We have had a busy week receiving entries and opening shipments...

We have had a busy week receiving entries and opening shipments for our Self, Observed exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art.
Artist Statement

This video is a metaphor of what life means to me. It is an exploration, a search and a connection to my dreams. This video is about a search of what is usually invisible.

Pneuma means a breath of life that occurs when the wind throws the air in motion. In this video, a traveler crosses the sea following a path written between the ropes swayed by the wind. A story was written in a secret book between the ropes; it was written in hieroglyphs, dreams and silence. This book revealed itself only in brief moments and the traveler forgot them as soon as she read each story. While walking, following the sound of the waves days and nights passed and there were moments when there was no sound. The story ended revealing that a deer had just broken away from the ropes; she then realized it was herself.

The Museum recognizes that many fine works were submitted, but could not be chosen for Self, Observed. The efforts of each artist will be acknowledged individually, through Image Slam, a flat screen monitor included in the Self, Observed exhibition, which will display a digital slideshow of all works of art that were submitted.

Students in Curatorial Projects at UNC, Chapel Hill, under the supervision of Professor elin o’Hara slavick and the Museum, selected 43 artists from over 160 submissions. Jurors considered how entries illustrate the autobiographical exploration of self-identity, through self-portraiture and ask questions such as: “Would Rembrandt like this?” “What does this say about the person represented?” “Does the artist push the medium?” “Can the public relate to the piece?” The works of art that were selected for Self, Observed, were chosen because theyrepresent an exciting diversity of style, media, age, conceptual intent, and rendering that complement the self-analysis and intensity of Rembrandt’s portraiture.

The following students’ works of art were selected:

A New Look

Date: 2011

Dimensions: 40 seconds

Artist Statement:
Robert Long is a mixed media artist incorporating installation, video, and performance to create an immersive experience. Currently a second year MFA candidate at Washington University in St. Louis and received his BFA in sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute.

A New Look is a video short conceived during a weeklong exploration of identity, mimicry, and grooming. Long was assigned a daily beauty and hygiene routine which he followed for seven days. These performative acts of the everyday forced the artist to challenge definitions of self, creating a new persona, by living the life of another.

New Self, Observed Video Short

 Nicholas Geankoplis
Pioggia Bianca
2010, Video
Alfred University

Artist Statement

My work is an exploration of the geological, technological and sociological history of clay. I create time-based installations, sculptural objects and utilitarian vessels containing archetypal insignia from a global culture. My work explores the duality of legacy and decay, construction and deconstruction, and the architecture of man versus that of nature.

My installations speak more directly to creation and decay. In this time-based work, I use a video camera to record the dissolution of unfired clay in water. The objects themselves have been instilled with cultural and social insignia.

The content in my work mirrors my own internal dialogue. The partially articulated narratives are a direct reflection of intersections and experiences in my life.
